ABOUT THE EVENT

Katherine Zawadzki's Capstone Project comes together as the public presentation of a private space – a Teen Witch’s bedroom. Often the first place over which teens have primary control, the bedroom is an extension of self that reflects interests, taste, and identity; it is made over, rearranged, painted, and purged to represent its inhabitant and her current self. The exhibit is not only visual, but also an interactive experience that aims to capture and communicate the appeal and validity of Witchcraft as a means of defining a self identity.

ARTIST STATEMENT

BUT, WHY?

My primary intention here is to bring Witchcraft to a level of popular understanding. I want to mortalize the practice, if you will, making it less of a mystery, but still allowing it to be mysterious. I am not an expert. I cannot show or tell you everything there is to know about Witchcraft, because it is an endless topic and I only have my own tiny, narrow, Western view of Witchcraft to use as support. There are countless manifestations of Witchcraft around the world that have not been acknowledged here: for example the Spanish Brujeria, New Orleans Voudou, or South African Isangoma. If you’re curious about cultural variations I encourage you to take a look online for more information – the internet is such a magical tool for finding out anything you want to know!
